A PRESENTATION FROM THE PAST.
At Hexagon our heritage is very important to us and helps inspire our dedication to customer service. Looking through the archives we uncovered photos and information dating back from the 70’s on our marketing activities and events at the time.
In this section of the website we have uploaded some notes from a presentation written at the time which we thought would be of interest, and a bit of fun for you to see. They show how even back then we were dedicated to our customers and our staff, but also have some interesting views into our entrance into F1 racing and the cost of cars in the 70’s.
Take a look below to see what was happening at Hexagon 40 years ago, and enjoy some retro photographs in our dealer gallery.
THIS IS HEXAGON
The purpose of this presentation is to give a brief visual picture of the Hexagon group: How it all started; the manner and direction in which it grew to its present day size; what has made the expansion so rapid – yet controlled; and the people behind it. Above all, what lies in the future.
THE BEGINNING
In 1964 Paul Michaels started a small tuning business in a mews garage in Hampstead. That same year he met Ron Spiegel (ex Healey apprentice) and in a very short while the two were partners.
From these very small beginnings one mews garage became two and eventually four. Operating a straight forward garage with no franchise holding, they moved out into their new premises in North Hill and at the same time took on a franchise for Reliant Scimitar and subsequently ones for Alfa, Marcos, BMW and Lotus. The rise continued with their becoming concessionaires for the Monterverdi.
Soon the North Hill premises were too small, and Hexagon expanded into a sales showroom directly opposite. In 1971 even that was not enough. In that year the entire workshops moved into new premises in Highgate Village where high quality bodywork could be undertaken in proper surroundings, still leaving adequate space for all the aspects of mechanical repair and development work.
Today, Hexagon has acquired a Porsche franchise and is currently negotiating a London distributor for another famous marque.
HOW HEXAGON IS DOING
Our charts show the steady expansion rate of the company over the past 5 years. While this expansion has been rapid it has also been carefully planned and controlled. With a policy of aiming for the high quality end of the market, it is interesting to note that the new cars in the showrooms tend to average between £2,000 and £10,000, and second hand vehicles are virtually never more than 2 years old.
In an age of mediocrity Hexagon policy is to supply only the best. Hence the abundance of Ferraris, Aston Martins, Porsches and BMWs in our showroom. We only sell what we like because we cannot enthuse over what we don’t. Enthusiasm is contagious and consequently sales follow naturally. This policy has worked to build up a large and prosperous high-performance motor business far more quickly than would otherwise have been possible.
THE PEOPLE OF HEXAGON.
Not to be under estimated at any time, it is the people that make Hexagon. There is a pleasant atmosphere in both offices and workshops and from the top down everyone works together as a team. This camaraderie means that people enjoy working for and with Hexagon which results in a high standard of workmanship and a great deal of enthusiasm.
A selection of Hexagon people is shown in the photo. Reading the pictures clockwise from top left, they are:
Peter Hegarty Sales Manager
Tommy Leech Workshop director
Paul Michaels
Roger Perks Director and General Manager
Rob Spiegel
Frank Swanson Chief Racing Mechanic
Graham Kendall Chief Workshop Reception and Customer Liason
George Kalermakis Racing Mechanic….and everybody else
